Revolution in Our Hands: Why Young People Can’t Ignore Politics

Updated: 14 hours ago

Hey everyone! In today's blog, I will talk about something that affects all of us, whether we realize it or not—politics. Now, before you roll your eyes, hear me out. Politics isn’t just about old men arguing in suits. It’s about power, change, and the future—and whether we like it or not, that future belongs to us. Yet, young people such as myself are often dismissed as too naive, too emotional, or too obsessed with TikTok to care about "serious" issues. But the truth? We’re more engaged than ever. We just refuse to play along with a system that doesn’t listen to us. That’s exactly why we need to make ourselves impossible to ignore.

Why Should We Care?

Every political decision affects us. The laws being passed today will determine whether we can afford higher education, whether we’ll have jobs in an AI-driven world, whether we’ll have clean air to breathe, and whether our rights will be protected. When tuition fees rise, when governments fail to act on climate change, when decisions about our bodies and identities are made without us—who has to deal with the consequences? We do. If we stay silent now, we’ll be stuck living with choices we had no say in.

Politics Is Everywhere—Even in What You Love

A lot of people think politics is just about elections, but it’s in literally everything we do. It’s in the music we listen to, the social movements we follow, the brands we buy from, and the apps we use.

  • When artists speak out about injustice, that’s political.

  • When companies exploit workers and harm the planet, that’s political.

  • When governments regulate the internet and control what we see online, that’s political.

We already engage with political issues every day—we just don’t always realize it, and recognizing this is the first step toward realizing the power we have.

Breaking the “Lazy & Apathetic” Myth

Adults love to say that young people don’t care about politics. But if we can passionately argue about our favorite movies, analyze every detail of a Billie Eilish song, or debate which social media trend is the best, then we definitely can understand political systems. The problem isn’t that we don’t care—it’s that the system is built to exclude us. The voting age is still high in most countries, politicians rarely speak directly to us, and mainstream media ignores young activists. But history proves that young people are always at the forefront of change.

How Young People Are Already Changing the World

  • The Climate Strikes: Greta Thunberg started a global movement as a teenager, forcing world leaders to address climate change.

  • Gun Control Movements: In the U.S., high school students organized massive protests demanding stricter gun laws after school shootings.

  • Social Media Advocacy: From exposing corruption to organizing mutual aid, Gen Z has used platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter (X) to hold governments accountable and spread awareness like never before.

Using Our Voices: How to Get Involved

Even if we can’t vote yet, we still have power. Here’s how we can use it:

  1. Get Informed – Follow reliable news sources, fact-check, and stay updated on issues that matter.

  2. Speak Up – Don’t be afraid to start conversations, whether it’s in class, at home, or online. Change starts with dialogue.

  3. Use Social Media for Good – Share awareness, challenge misinformation, and support movements that align with your values.

  4. Support Activism & Grassroots Movements – Sign petitions, attend rallies, and amplify important causes.

What’s Next?

The world is changing faster than ever, and we’re not just spectators—we’re participants. We have access to more information, more platforms, and more influence than any generation before us. So let’s stop buying into the idea that politics isn’t for us. Let’s prove that young voices aren’t just valuable, they’re essential.
