Finding Comfort in Sound: How Music Became My Escape

Updated: 14 hours ago

Hi everyone! If you can’t tell by the title, today I’m going to be talking about how music has helped me find myself and heal, and how it can do the same for you. I’ve always believed that music understands me better than most people do. There’s something about getting lost in a song that makes the chaos in my head feel a little quieter. When words fail, music speaks. In a world that often feels overwhelming, it has been my greatest escape, my therapy, and, in many ways, the thing that has slowly helped me figure out who I really am.

Music as an Escape and a Mirror

I’ve always struggled to put my emotions into words. I feel things deeply, but expressing them? That’s the hard part. Then I found music. So, when life feels overwhelming, I put my headphones on, press play, and let myself disappear into the sound. But the funny thing is, while I escape into music, I also end up finding myself. Certain songs bring emotions to the surface that I didn’t even know I was holding in. They validate my feelings in a way that words from others sometimes can’t.

Some days, I need soft piano and slow, haunting vocals to match my mood. Other times, I blast something upbeat, something that makes my heart race and reminds me I’m alive. Music lets me explore every part of myself, the sadness, the joy, the uncertainty, all without judgment.

Lyrics That Speak What We Can’t Say

Have you ever heard a song and thought, Wow, that’s exactly how I feel? That moment is powerful. It makes you feel less alone like someone out there understands you completely. For me, Billie Eilish’s music does that. Her lyrics, her sound, the rawness—it’s like she’s taking emotions straight from my own heart and putting them into words.

Sometimes, when I can’t find a way to express what’s in my head, I send someone a song instead. It’s my way of saying, this is what I mean, this is how I feel. Music gives me a voice when I struggle to find my own.

Healing Through Sound

Beyond just feeling understood, music is actually therapeutic. Science even backs it up! It is proven that listening to music can lower stress, ease anxiety, and even help with depression. For me, it’s like a reset button. A song can change my entire mood. The right playlist can turn a bad day into something manageable, even beautiful.

It’s also a reminder that pain is temporary. So many artists write about heartbreak, loss, and struggle—but they turn it into something beautiful. If they can take their pain and make something meaningful from it, then maybe I can, too.

Let Music Guide You

If you ever feel lost, listen to music. Let it comfort you, inspire you, and help you process emotions you don’t have the words for yet. Find songs that feel like home, artists who speak to your soul, and lyrics that remind you that you’re not alone.

Music won’t solve everything, but it will remind you that healing isn’t linear. Some days will be messy, some will be beautiful, and through it all, there will always be a song that understands exactly what you need. And maybe, just maybe, in those lyrics, you’ll find yourself too.
